He became so engrossed with making money for his mother, that it eventually took his life. His body could not handle the rigors of riding the rocking horse and it killed him. When his mother reads the note that she will receive pounds for her birthday for the next five years, she goes straight to the lawyer to ask him to release the whole immediately, Paul was disappointed that this was not enough for her.
Paul is unsure of his choice of horse in the upcoming derby, it ends up making him very ill. Paul ends up dying in his sleep after he discovers he made the correct choice and won the bet.
